The decommissioning of the OpenText Austin, TX site was executed in two distinct phases, each addressing specific areas and systems within the facility. Trash Masters LLC’s role was to provide a comprehensive, safe, and environmentally responsible dismantling and removal service — from IT equipment and furniture to heavy power and data infrastructure.
Phase 1: Office Decommission & Equipment Removal
Phase 1 encompassed the decommissioning and removal of all office, IT, and furniture assets from the OpenText Austin office at 1301 S. Mopac Expy, Suite 150. This included secure IT hardware destruction, furniture disassembly, and minor wall and finish repairs.
1. IT Equipment Removal and Recycling
- Consolidation, palletization, and shipment of: 8 WAPs, 14 PCs, 31 LCDs, 8 laptops, 20 boxes of peripherals, 6 boxes of printer materials, and all network gear per MTASK005.
- All hard drives were destroyed with certification of destruction provided.
2. Furniture Removal and Resale/Disposal
- Removal and safe disassembly of 61 Allsteel cubicles, 3 Herman Miller Ethospace cubicles, 15 private offices, and 2 conference rooms.
- Removal of loose whiteboards (19 total); built-in whiteboards cleaned and left in place.
- Removal of file cabinets, bookcases, chairs, and miscellaneous furniture.
- Electrical feeds and whips associated with furniture systems safely disconnected.
3. Miscellaneous Tasks and Wall Repair
- Removal of TV mounts in conference and break rooms with patching and paint prep.
- Removal of low-voltage cabling and badge reader hardware (upon client approval).
- Replacement of data plates with blank covers.
- Removal and recycling of all IDF equipment (2–3 racks).
- Final patching and surface prep to restore walls for painting.
Not Included in Scope:
- Fire suppression or alarm work
- Kitchen appliance removal
- Name tag removals
- Office supplies or minisplit HVAC unit
Phase 2: Data Center Decommission
Phase 2 focused on the removal and logistics of all major IT, electrical, and mechanical infrastructure from the OpenText data center facility. Work included careful segregation of salvageable equipment, documentation for certified e-waste recycling, and coordination of multiple outbound shipments.
1. Data Center Rooms (DC1 & DC2)
- Stay-in-place: ladder racks, fiber trays, structured cabling between rooms, and floor PDUs.
- Removal: cabling, server racks, network gear, engineering desks, and junk storage.
- All areas swept and left clean.
2. Equipment Shipments & Logistics
- 8 APC 42U racks shipped to Allen, TX.
- 30 white APC racks shipped to Tinton Falls, NJ.
- Network/server assets shipped to Brook Park, OH.
- Building signage removed with boom lift.
3. Power and Electrical Infrastructure
- Removal of Symmetra PX 500 and PowerWare 9315 UPS units including all conduits and barriers.
- Removal of (2) Powersmith PDUs, Starline Busduct, and associated cabling.
- All electrical work performed by licensed TX electricians.
4. Battery Systems and Disposal
- Removal of 160 Enersys 12HX540 sealed lead-acid batteries.
- All materials palletized, removed, and recycled with certification of disposal.
5. IT Asset Removal and Certification
- Over 900 servers and 6,000+ hard drives removed, cataloged, and destroyed.
- Certificates of destruction and recycling provided for all IT assets.
- Additional removal of network switches, PCs, and monitors.
6. Miscellaneous and Cleanup
- Removal of one server lift, miscellaneous storage items, and debris.
- Cleaning and restoration of battery, UPS, and storage rooms after removal.
Phase 3: Final Closeout & Site Readiness
After all removals, floors and access pathways were cleaned and prepped for handover. Network, cabling, and access systems were safely de-energized and terminated to code. Final documentation of recycling, asset disposition, and disposal was compiled for OpenText’s records.
